Patterns that suit Lubbock homes
Lubbock's housing ranges from brick bungalows and ranch houses near Texas Tech to large stone-and-stucco homes in the newer south and west neighborhoods. Stamped patterns look best when they echo the house: ashlar slate and flagstone for most brick homes, cobble or brick borders for older streets, and larger, simpler stone patterns for modern exteriors.
Earth tones are a natural fit for the South Plains: sandy tans, terracotta, warm browns and the reddish colors of the local soil. They hide the fine dust that blows in on windy days far better than dark grays or very light whites.
Seeing finished stamped work in person, or at least in photos taken outdoors, is the best way to choose. Colors look different under the strong, high-altitude sun of Lubbock than they do on a sample board indoors.

Built for freezes and dry wind
Stamped concrete has a textured, sealed surface, and it suffers if water gets into it and freezes. Using an air-entrained mix, finishing at the right moisture and sealing the surface keep winter scaling away from the pattern.
Wind matters while the concrete is being stamped. The surface has to stay workable long enough for the stamps to be pressed in, and on a dry, gusty day it can stiffen too quickly. Experienced crews plan the pour for calmer hours, keep the crew size right for the area and use evaporation retarders when needed.
Underneath, it is a structural slab like any other: a compacted base, steel and control joints, often cut along lines in the pattern so they are hard to see.

Patios, courtyards and entries
Stamped patios are the most common request, often combined with a covered area or a privacy wall that blocks the prevailing wind. A patio sheltered from the southwest wind is used far more often in spring and fall.
Front walks and entries are a smaller project with a big effect on curb appeal. A stamped walk with a border, or a plain walk with stamped bands, can make an older home look updated without changing anything else.
Courtyards between the house and garage, common in some Lubbock designs, are another good place for stamped concrete, because they are protected and visible from inside.
Steps and landings in stamped concrete need a pattern with grip on the treads and a contrasting edge so they are easy to see in low evening light.

Pool decks
Stamped pool decks need a texture with grip and a light enough color to stay comfortable under bare feet in summer. Anti-slip additives in the sealer improve safety when the deck is wet.
Pool decks also need expansion joints where they meet the coping, so movement in the soil does not crack the pool beam. The soil around a new pool shell must be compacted before the deck goes in.
Chlorine, salt water and constant wetting wear sealers faster, so pool decks usually need resealing more often than patios.

Sealing and long-term care
The sealer is what keeps stamped concrete looking new. In Lubbock's sun and wind, most stamped surfaces need resealing every two to three years, more often for pool decks and south-facing patios.
Hail can scuff a worn sealer, and blowing dust can dull it. Regular cleaning with a mild detergent and inspecting the surface after storms help catch problems early.
Avoid salt-based de-icers on stamped concrete in winter. Sand or a product labeled safe for concrete is a better choice on icy days.

Restoring faded stamped concrete
Faded or stained stamped concrete is often fine underneath. Cleaning, stripping an old sealer that has turned white, and applying a tinted reseal or new antiquing color can restore it at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Cracks can be filled and colored to blend, though they will rarely disappear completely. Sections that settled can sometimes be lifted, and broken sections can be replaced and stamped to match, with some color difference.
The contractor will tell you whether restoring or replacing gives the better result.
For stamped concrete near a driveway, remember that cars carry salt and grit from treated streets in winter. Rinsing the stamped surface after storms keeps salt from sitting on the sealer.
